Refuting Geert Wilder's "Fitna"

Fitna is a 2008 cinematic commentary by Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilder's about Islam. Approximately 17 minutes in length, the movie shows selected excerpts from Suras of the Qur'an, interspersed with media clips and newspaper cuttings showing or describing acts of violence and/or hatred by Muslims. The film attempts to demonstrate that the Qur'an motivates its followers to hate all who violate Islamic teachings.

This page will refute Geert's claims using all the verses he uses in his film.

Geert Wilders first claim is that Verse 8:60 commands Muslims to attack non believers.
This is the verse used in his film.
>Prepare for them whatever force and cavalry ye are able of gathering, to strike terror, to strike terror into the hearts of the enemies, of Allah and your enemies. [1]
Lets have a look at the actual verse in several different translations [2]
>Hence, make ready against them whatever force and war mounts you are able to muster, so that you might deter thereby the enemies of God, who are your enemies as well, and others besides them of whom you may be unaware, [but] of whom God is aware; and whatever you may expend in God's cause shall be repaid to you in full, and you shall not be wronged.
>And prepare against them what force you can and horses tied at the frontier, to frighten thereby the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them, whom you do not know (but) Allah knows them; and whatever thing you will spend in Allah's way, it will be paid back to you fully and you shall not be dealt with unjustly.
>And prepare for them whatever you were able of strength, including a string of horses, to put fear in the enemy of God and your enemy and others besides whom you know them not. God knows them. And whatever thing you spend in the way of God, the account will be paid in full to you and you will not be wronged.
It is clear from the real verse that this is a command to Muslims to be prepared in case of enemy attacks, and to keep a large Army to deter any would be attackers.
Further proof which discredits Geert's claim is the verse following directly after 8:60
In three different Translations of 8:61 [3]
>But if they incline to peace, incline thou to it as well, and place thy trust in God: verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing!
>If they resort to peace, so shall you, and put your trust in God. He is the Hearer, the Omniscient.
>If they incline to peace, you too incline to it, and put your trust in Allah. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
This is extremely clear. If any would be attackers or enemies want peace, then so shall you. This entirely refutes Geert's claim because if 8:60 was about unconditionally attacking disbelievers, why would we be told straight after to make peace if they want peace?

The next Verse Geert uses to attack Islam is verse 4:56. [1]
Geert claims this verse is justification for Muslims to be Antisemitic and attack Jews.
Lets look at the verse in three translations. [4]
>Those who reject our Signs, We shall soon cast into the Fire: as often as their skins are roasted through, We shall change them for fresh skins, that they may taste the penalty: for Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.
>We shall send those who reject Our revelations to the Fire. When their skins are burnt up, We shall replace them with new ones so that they may continue to taste the punishment. God is mighty and wise.
>We shall send those who reject Our revelations to the Fire. When their skins have been burned away, We shall replace them with new ones so that they may continue to feel the pain: God is mighty and wise.
As you can see, this verse has nothing to do with Anti-Semitism, it doesn't even mention Jews or Israelis. Geerts claim has absolutely no basis. Furthermore, the first Muslims were Arabs, Arabs are Semites!
On a side note, some claim this verse is a command to Muslims towards non Muslims. This is not true, this verse is clearly speaking of non-believers punishment in Hell, not an earthly command. This is backed up by the following verse. [5]
>And as for those who believe and do good works, We shall make them enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow - to dwell therein for ever; there for them are pure companions - and We shall make them enter plenteous shade.
This is speaking of those who are good, telling us they will go to heaven. This makes it clear that the previous verse was referring to Hell.

The next verse Geert uses is 47:4, he claims that again this verse tells Muslims to kill and attack Non-Muslims.
Again lets look at several different translations of the verse [6]
>Now when ye meet in battle those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain.
>So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make (them) prisoners, and afterwards either set them free as a favor or let them ransom (themselves) until the war terminates. That (shall be so); and if Allah had pleased He would certainly have exacted what is due from them, but that He may try some of you by means of others; and (as for) those who are slain in the way of Allah, He will by no means allow their deeds to perish.
>When you meet the faithless in battle, strike their necks. When you have thoroughly decimated them, bind the captives firmly. Thereafter either oblige them [by setting them free] or take ransom till the war lays down its burdens. That [is Allah’s ordinance], and had Allah wished He could have taken vengeance on them, but that He may test some of you by means of others. As for those who were slain in the way of Allah, He will not let their works go awry.
It is clear from the verse itself that this is not an order to go out and kill but the permission to kill those who you are in battle with. It does not say go to battle, it talks about within a battle, and who will say except the pacifists that it is something abhorrently evil to kill those you are in battle with?

Geert then attacks verse 4:89. His video claims this verse permits killing those who leave the religion of Islam[1]. Let us look at the verse in three translations. [7]
>They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks
>They wish that you disbelieve as they have disbelieved, then you become equal. Do not consider them friends, unless they mobilize along with you in the cause of God. If they turn against you, you shall fight them, and you may kill them when you encounter them in war. You shall not accept them as friends, or allies.
>They would love for you disbelieve just as they disbelieve, so you will be exactly like them. Do not adopt sponsors from among them until they migrate along God´s way. If they should ever turn against you, then seize them and kill them wherever you may find them. Do not adopt any sponsor nor supporter from among them,
I think it's fairly obvious to anyone with basic reading comprehension that this verse is not commanding Muslims to kill people who leave the religion, but only commanding Muslims to fight the people who leave Islam and then turn on it and fight Islam. Its clear the verse is talking about a situation of war. Kill those who leave Islam AND then physically fight you, not simply, kill those who leave Islam, as Geert claims.

The next verse and final verse that Geert uses is 8:39. This is the verse as claimed by him.
>Fight them until there is no dissension, and the religion is entirely Allah's.[1]
Geert claims this verse commands Muslims to fight all non Muslims until the only religion is Islam. Geert actually misses off the end of the verse which is crucial in understanding this verse. Below i will show you 3 different translations of the full verse of 8:39. [8]
>Fight them off until there is no more persecution, and Religion belongs wholly to God: yet if they do stop, then God is Observant of anything they do.
>And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is all for Allah. But if they cease, then lo! Allah is Seer of what they do.
>And fight them all until there is no more oppression, and so that the entire system is God's. But if they cease, then God is watcher over what they do.
Firstly, the verse is talking about fighting in a situation where one is being oppressed or persecution, which automatically sets the situation up to mean self defense and not offensive, as Geert claims. Secondly, when including the entire verse as Geert does not, it becomes obvious the verse is talking about people who are attacking you, and if they stop, then do not fight them, something Geert conveniently missed out.
And yes, the verse is talking about religion being only Islam, but considering the pretext is being attacked and persecuted for your faith, the only logical reasoning is that the verse is talking about people trying to force Muslims to give up their faith, not force the world to become Islam. How could the verse possibly be talking about forcing everyone to be Muslim given the pretext of being attacked for being Muslim.

These are all the verses Geert uses to attack Islam, his claims are easily refuted simply by reading the full verse clearly or the context around it. The majority of the time the verse does not even say what he claims, and you only have to read it to say that. Other times he misses out parts of the verse, or completely takes it out of context.
Its clear that Geert is lying and knows that he is lying. This film Fitna is nothing more than Anti-Islamic hate propaganda.
